Leeks are a classic winter crop with a long harvesting period that can take you from Autumn right through to Spring. A very hardy plant, you can be harvesting leeks on even the coldest of winter days. Dating back to the 1800s, Musselburgh is a very popular variety with strong growth that produces thick stems.

Growing Instructions:

1. Either indoors or outdoors sow thinly in trays or pots, cover lightly with compost and keep moist. For early indoor sowings provide warmth. Seeds should germinate in 14-21 days.
2. As seedlings grow transplant into larger pots. Harden off indoor sowings before transplanting outside.
3. Between May and July transplant to final growing positions outdoors. Leave 15cm (6in) spacing between plants and 30cm (12in) between rows.
   
4. To produce white stems earth up leeks as they grow. Mound soil up around the stem to exclude light. 

Sow indoors: January - May
Sow outdoors: March - July

Harvest leeks from October through to March. This is an annual that will be ready to harvest within the first year of planting.
